The Female Dominant

Violence in sex and the erotic gratification derived from it are not new. The ancient Mesopotamian societies and the Romans often delighted in torturing and humiliating their slaves for sexual ends, every era has had its underground of those who voluntarily engaged in corporal domination and submission.

But one of the most bizarre aspects of behavior, which has puzzled observers for thousands of years, is the phenomenon female domination. Many who claim to understand how a man can brutalize a woman and how the woman become aroused by such treatment are totally at a loss to comprehend the other side of the coin, which to them seems to go against the grain of human nature. How, they ask, can a male take pleasure being tormented by a female? And what sort of aberration would prompt a member of the "weaker" sex to systematically debase and humiliate a member of the "stronger" sex?

Psychoanalytic rigmarole on the subject is endless; women who practice female domination, sexologists tell us, do so out of a need for revenge on their fathers or brothers or boyfriends; men who grovel before women have deep-seated needs to be humiliated or to be once again under the control of their mothers. In the end, all that these theories do, is serve as a rationalization and defense of macho chauvinism by male psychologists. What seems more to the point, is what the men and woman who participate in female domination think and feel about it. Margaret K., a fashion designer who admits that she enjoys whipping her boyfriend, until blood flows, in her New York apartment, puts it this way, 'I underwent psychoanalysis for seven years, three with Freudian and four with a variety of other types. They told me I hated my Mother for not having a penis and blamed my Father for it, that I couldn't accept being a female and wanted to prove I'm better than men, and all kinds of other rubbish. So what difference does it make? Harold and I enjoy ourselves. He likes to be whipped and I like to whip him. For domination addicts, that just about says it all. Domination games are as varied as the people who participate in them. Satisfaction for some couples comes from the female partner teasing and tormenting the male, getting him turned on and hot, then refusing to ease his lust hardened sex. Other couples enjoy scatology, in which the Domina urinates or defecates on her slave. While female domination is commonly classified as sadomasochistic, it is an activity that is limited to pain for pleasure; in this sense, the sadism involved is seldom is seldom violent, brutal and cruel. More often it manifests itself in the form of mild corporal punishment that from the very onset is purely sexual in nature.

Female domination, of course, involves not only an aggressive woman but is also concerned with that facet of the male psyche that seems to yearn for both psychic and physical gratification through submission to the opposite sex. The submissive male who yields to the dominant female, knows in advance that she will use him as an instrument of her own pleasure and most likely deny him his fulfillment. But even in that knowledge, he derives a kind of tormented joy from speculation. And as she progresses from tyranny to tyranny, his hopes of fulfillment, even as they grow dimmer, seem at the same time to become more exquisitely powerful.
